Some 1,600 jungle-clad limestone karsts rise sheer from emerald water across 1,500 km² of the Gulf of Tonkin — the result of 20 million years of dissolving rock. UNESCO inscribed the bay in 1994 and again in 2000 for its geological significance.
The classic way to visit is a 1- or 2-night cruise from Tuan Chau or Halong City. Days are spent kayaking through hidden lagoons, swimming off the deck and visiting Sung Sot Cave; nights are spent on deck under sparser stars than you've seen anywhere in mainland Vietnam.
Lan Ha Bay, the southern extension off Cat Ba Island, is quieter and increasingly preferred by smaller operators.
